This photoshoot turns out to be a bit of a miracle. Pushed back twice, far enough into October to give us heart palpitations over the weather, hurricanes causing floral trauma, 3 different sets of models and a partridge in a pear tree later, a team of outstanding artists came together to create some magic. We had a dream of a day, despite the chilly wind, not only getting to collaborate together in design and photography, but also with a dream team of Syracuse and Auburn area wedding vendors: The Inns of Aurora, Fleur de Lis Florist, Kindly Letter Co., Hank Parker’s Rentals, Mirror Mirror Bridal Inc., Crazy Beautiful Co. and Sugar & Slice. Such artistry and talent, such wonderful people coming together to play wedding together– it was good for the soul.
My inspiration for this shoot was simply letting the walls talk to me. The Inns of Aurora, and the quaint town of Aurora, found in the heart of the Finger Lakes Region of New York, is in itself enough to inspire, but tucked away in the corner of the main Inn is an old historic site they lovingly refer to as “The Ruins.” Every time I’m out to do a wedding there, (or just hanging out with one of my favorite gals on the planet, the Inn’s wedding coordinator, Heather), I can’t help but dream about this little stack of stones and how it feels like a modern time machine. Ty and I have been itching to do a style shoot to create a look that not only blends the trends of now, but embraced a timeless elegance all at once textured, imperfect, beloved and wild as the stones surrounding it.
Can I tell you the story?! The Ruins are the remains from the only steam powered grist mill on this side of the Hudson, built in 1833! Farmers would bring their grain down to be processed by steam from lake water, then barges would take it up and down the east coast by way of the Erie Canal. You’ll find it on the National Historic Registry and now, with a bit of care, is cleared for the wanderer to find. I love how it feels like we could be on the coast of anywhere, Maine, Scotland, Spain or our backyard. It’s days like this (and this one literally started out with a rainbow and ended with a stunning sunset) I am both completely at home and transported everywhere all at once. So, come take a little romantic sunset stroll with us and hopefully leave here inspired.
Tell us, what do you think? What do you love? What inspires you about getting married, the Finger Lakes, autumn in New York?
A HUGE thank you and our endless gratitude from us to this amazing Dream Team:
